The Level 3 Certificate for Pet Care in Retail has been designed to provide learners with a framework of knowledge when providing customer care and looking after pets in a retail environment. It is aimed at those who are currently working in pet shops or planning to do so in the future. It will allow learners to formalise their learning if already working in the sector and caring for pets.

This comprehensive Pet Care in Retail qualification covers legislative requirements, ethical considerations, and practical skills essential for success in the industry. Topics include legal responsibilities in pet care, health and welfare needs of common pets, customer care, providing informed advice to new pet owners, exploring ethical aspects of pet ownership, and understanding nutritional needs for optimal animal health and welfare.

On completion of the qualification, learners will be equipped with the knowledge and commitment to thrive in the pet care retail sector while promoting responsible ownership and ethical practices.

Learners may progress on to further studies within animal care or employment in roles within pet shops. Learners could also look to progress within various other regulated qualifications within the animal care sector, to expand on their knowledge and experience in animal care further.

Working in pet care in retail

Those working at pet shops have the responsibility of caring for a wide range of small animals. They are required by law to provide a safe, clean and enriching environment and to ensure that animals are appropriately cared for. Having a comprehensive knowledge of animal care requirements and products is essential for working in a pet shop. These requirements are covered in the Level 3 Certificate for Pet Care in Retail.

Pet ownership has many advantages for wellbeing such as reducing stress and loneliness and providing opportunities for physical activity. Pet animals also experience advantages such as a safe home, consistent access to food and companionship. Working in a pet shop is an excellent opportunity to inform customers about what animals need to experience a good quality of life and what to consider before buying a pet.
